In our kindergarten classroom, we stress the Paragon mission to “Work Hard, Play Hard” every day. Our passionate teachers provide students with hands-on activities in classroom centers to help them grasp important academic concepts. Books help foster language and literacy skills, while also encouraging children to see the world from a variety of perspectives. Physical education, recess, music, and art classes also play an important part of our kindergarten curriculum.
1st Grade
First graders develop a sense of independence, self-confidence, and an overall responsibility for their learning. In language arts, they begin to make the connection between reading and writing as they learn to think like writers. Students learn best writing practices and create their own writing pieces in all genres. In math, first graders explore number operations and become fluent in addition and subtraction. In science and social studies, they explore the world and their role in it. Students also enjoy daily physical education and recess, and bi-weekly music and art classes.
2nd Grade
Second grade is a time for students to showcase their confidence. They have learned the basics and now they’re perfecting their skills and becoming more independent. Students become more experienced at writing and reading by pursuing projects that require research and more complex, critical thinking. In science and social studies, students increase their overall understanding of how and why things work. In addition to our core academic curriculum, second graders also enjoy daily physical education and recess, and bi-weekly music and art classes.
3rd Grade
By third grade, students are expected to be responsible, independent, and organized. Lessons in third grade are engaging, interactive, and fun for all students. Reading continues to be at the heart of everything we do. Third graders are not only focused on reading increasingly difficult texts, but also deepening their understanding of the material they read. They also focus on the complete writing process during “free write” in their journals. In math, addition and subtraction facts are muscle memory as we continue to build upon the concept of multiplication that was introduced in second grade. Our science curriculum focuses on the physical, Earth, and life sciences. Students will demonstrate their understanding throughout the year with presentations. In addition to core curriculum subjects, students receive lessons that focus on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Third grade shares specialized teachers and enjoys twice daily physical education, as well as weekly music and art classes.
4th Grade
Fourth grade students rely on a variety of fiction and nonfiction content to expand their understanding of the world in its past and present forms. Their exposure to diverse texts and authors, and their responses to those readings, help students develop critical thinking skills. They practice thinking more deeply as they find connections between themselves and the fictional characters or historical figures and events they encounter. They use spoken and written language to express and justify independent thought, and they use a variety of tools to share their knowledge. At this age, students make giant leaps in cognitive maturity, as they begin to see themselves as both skilled independent learners and contributors to the learning of others. Fourth grade shares specialized teachers and enjoys twice daily physical education, as well as weekly music and art classes.
5th Grade
Fifth grade is a pivotal year for our students as they prepare for the rigor of middle school. Independence and personal responsibility continue to play a major role in student learning and success. Students are challenged to master foundational mathematical concepts, while also given opportunities to familiarize themselves with algebraic concepts in preparation for pre-algebra in sixth grade. Social Studies focuses on the history and geography of the United States of America – the trying times and victories, the fascinating and heroic individuals as well as the villains, and the significant events that shaped our nation. Fifth grade shares specialized teachers and enjoys daily physical education, as well as weekly music and art classes.
